The Abstract for New Orleans Flooded:
New Orleans is a low-lying city with a large portion of it from 0 to 16 feet below sea-level. An extensive canal network diverts water out of the city into Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River using an elaborate pumping system. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds reaching 175 mph (281 km/hr), induced a storm surge followed by extensive rainfall, which caused the overtopping and breeching of levees surrounding the city of New Orleans. The September 7, 2005 Landsat image shows the extent of flooding in New Orleans.
