The Abstract for Southern United States Under Snow:
On January 2 and 3, 2012 a massive snow storm blanketed the Southeastern United States, a rare occurrence for that part of the country. A center of high pressure over the Appalachian Mountains of cold air advection mixed with existing stable low level warm humid air across the coastal Carolinas set-up an event resulting in heavy snowfall, freezing rain, and ice pellets. Areas in Georgia, the coastal Carolinas, and Virginia received up to 16 inches of snow. The storm delayed and caused the cancellation of about 600 flights, closed schools and businesses, and resulted in power outages affecting thousands of people.
